Bookstore volunteer, Tammy recommends Apartheid in and American City: At the time of original printing in the late 1980s, South Central was “73.9% [Black]”. In contrast to our most current census data in 2021, Los Angeles is now 8.8% Black. In the 10th Congressional District where our bookstore resides, it is 25.43% Black, despite being one of the few predominantly Black communities left in LA. Cynthia Hamilton delves deep into the mechanisms and legalities of gentrification and forced disbursement of the Black community in LA. It is not enough to read, we must understand the ways in which gentrification is weaponized against our Black neighborhoods and use this knowledge to organize for liberation.
