–by Cynthia Hamilton, Ph.D.
Apartheid in an American City
is a prescient 1987 work that virtually predicted L.A.’s 1992 rebellion. Cynthia Hamilton, a long-time resident of South Central L.A. and the director of the African and African American Studies Program at the University of Rhode Island, has generated a razor-sharp study of the forces of de-industrialization, racial gerrymandering, and discriminatory land-use patterns that transform areas such as South Central into “an American Bantustan.” Her analysis of the role of corporate forces in reducing South Central to “a community in the way” and her advocacy of a new multiracial social movement based on sustainable economic development places Apartheid at the vortex of race, class, environment, and urban policy. 1987.
